The FDA has issued a recall notice, after several eggs from plants in Iowa were traced back as sources of salmonella – related illness. We have not heard of any cases locally, and it is highly unlikely that any of the egg cartons made it down here, but since some of the distributors do include local chains, please check you egg cartons for the following information:
All cartons have a “P” followed by the number code for the plant they were harvested from, in this case look for plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. The next step is to confirm that your egg carton involves the affected harvesting dates, in this case those corresponding to julian calendar dates of 136 to 225 (May 16, 2010 – Aug 13, 2010).
The CDC has set up a website with more information about the recall, as well as information about salmonella symptoms. http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/enteritidis/
